What is the best AI image model in 2026?
Updated October 23, 2026 · By Jason Miller
There is no single best AI image model in 2026; by job, GPT Image 2.5 leads for accurate text and precise edits, Nano Banana Pro for finished product and campaign photos, Midjourney V8.2 for aesthetic artwork and Adobe Firefly for commercial safety, and Sloosh puts the first two side by side in a Studio picker of 22 image models (Sloosh docs, Oct 2026). It also has Ideogram 4.5, Flux 2 Pro and Nano Banana 2.1, so you can test a shortlist on one prompt.
Leaderboards move every few weeks, and many answers, Google's AI Overview among them, still name GPT Image 2 as the top model. The question that holds up is which model is best for the image you need.
Quick picks by job
- Text that must be spelled right: GPT Image 2.5 Flare, FLUX.3 Image or Ideogram 4.5.
- Product and e-commerce photos: Nano Banana Pro.
- Change one thing in a photo: GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst or Ideogram 4.5.
- Exact brand colours: Flux 2 Pro, which takes hex codes tied to objects.
- Aesthetic artwork and moodboards: Midjourney V8.2, its default model since July 24, 2026.
- Commercially safe stock-style images: Adobe Firefly Image 5.
- Free everyday images: Nano Banana 2 in the Gemini app.
What the leaderboards say (October 2026)
Two public leaderboards rank image models by blind votes between pairs of images: LMArena (published October 7, 2026) and Artificial Analysis (refreshed September 2026, checked October 23, 2026).
| Model | Maker | LMArena rank (score) | Artificial Analysis rank (Elo) | Checked on |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst | OpenAI | 1 (1,425) | 1 (1,222) | Oct 23, 2026 |
| GPT Image 2.5 Flare | OpenAI | 2 (1,398) | 2 (1,207) | Oct 23, 2026 |
| GPT Image 2 | OpenAI | 3 (1,383) | 3 (1,186) | Oct 23, 2026 |
| Grok Imagine Image 2.0 | xAI | 4 (1,334) | 6 (1,166) | Oct 23, 2026 |
| MAI-Image-2.6 | Microsoft AI | 5 (1,332) | 5 (1,166) | Oct 23, 2026 |
| Nano Banana 2.1 | 6 (1,328) | 4 (1,176) | Oct 23, 2026 | |
| Nano Banana Pro | 16 (1,248, 2K) | 11 (1,118) | Oct 23, 2026 |
GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst is first on both boards and in LMArena's text-rendering category. Places 4 to 6 are within the error margin. A leaderboard measures general preference, not a job: Nano Banana Pro ranks lower but gave the more ad-ready product shot in JXP's head-to-head. FLUX.3 Image is 13th on Artificial Analysis; Midjourney and Firefly are on neither board.
What Google's AI Overview gets right and wrong
Checked on October 23, 2026:
- "GPT Image 2 is the best overall... #1 on the Artificial Analysis Image Arena with an Elo score of 1,339." Out of date. GPT Image 2.5 shipped on September 8, 2026 and holds first and second on both boards; GPT Image 2 is third, at 1,186 on Artificial Analysis.
- "Midjourney V8.2" for artistic style. Right: V8.2 is Midjourney's default.
- "Nano Banana Pro... offers native 4096 × 4096 output." Right; JXP measured it.
- "FLUX.2" as the best open-weight model. Out of date. FLUX 3 Image Klein, Qwen-Image-2.1 and Fibo 2.0 now share first on Artificial Analysis's open-weights board.
- "Stable Diffusion 3.5" as the best free option. Only with your own GPU. Without one, Nano Banana 2 is free in the Gemini app.
How we compared
We used the LMArena and Artificial Analysis leaderboards, Fuser's typography test (updated Oct 2, 2026), JXP's head-to-head (Sept 15, 2026), each maker's own pages and Sloosh's model docs (sloosh.ai only), all checked on October 23, 2026. Sloosh publishes no benchmark of its own.
| Model | Maker | Best for | Where to use it | Checked on |

Choosing an image model by what the picture must get right.
Best for text: GPT Image 2.5 Flare, FLUX.3 Image and Ideogram 4.5
Fuser ran a poster and a menu prompt through nine models (September 28 to October 2, 2026) and counted every character. GPT Image 2.5 Flare and FLUX.3 Image reproduced all 283 characters with nothing added. Ideogram 4.5 and Qwen Image 3 matched them with prompt expansion turned off.
Ideogram 4.5 is Ideogram's typography model; Sloosh's docs date it to September 30, 2026. In Sloosh it makes 1K or 2K images from up to 5 images, and its edits keep untouched pixels intact, so they do not drift.
- Watch out for: every model is most reliable on short strings. Sloosh's YouTube Thumbnail Maker Space advises two to five words.
Best for product photos: Nano Banana Pro
Nano Banana Pro is Google's Gemini 3 Pro Image model. Sloosh recommends it for campaigns, e-commerce, product photography and hero images. In JXP's September 15, 2026 test against GPT Image 2.5, the product round tied on label accuracy, but JXP judged Nano Banana Pro's shot more ad-ready, and it delivered a full 4096 x 4096 px file at 4K.
- Watch out for: it is slower. JXP measured from under a minute to just over 2 minutes per image, against 20 to 40 seconds for GPT Image 2.5 at 1K.

Best for precise edits: GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst
OpenAI's image guide says to "choose Sunburst for workflows where editing precision matters most". It is Sloosh's default image model and takes up to 16 references in Studio, the most of any Sloosh image model.
- Watch out for: Sunburst spends longer per image than Flare, so draft on Flare first.

Best for brand colours: Flux 2 Pro
Flux 2 Pro is Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 [pro]. It takes exact colours as hex codes tied to objects, such as "a towel in #9CAF88 sage green", and combines up to 8 references. In Sloosh it makes 1K images.
Outside Sloosh: Midjourney and Adobe Firefly
- Midjourney. V8.2, the default since July 24, 2026, focuses on aesthetics, image quality and personalisation, Midjourney says. Best for: artwork, moodboards and a distinctive look.
- Adobe Firefly. Adobe says "Adobe Firefly models are commercially safe", trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain content. Its generator lists Firefly Image 5 first, beside partner models. Best for: Adobe teams who need clear licensing.
Testing image models side by side in Sloosh
Sloosh's docs suggest drafting on a fast model and making the final on a stronger one, for example Nano Banana Lite then Nano Banana Pro.
- Open Studio Image and pick the first model on your shortlist.
- Write the prompt, putting any required words in quotes, and check the cost on the Generate button.
- Generate up to 4 images at once.
- Press Recreate on a result, switch the model chip and run it again.
- Compare in My generations and keep the best.
Watch out for: Midjourney and Adobe Firefly are not in Sloosh. Sloosh has no free plan; a first workspace gets 20 starter credits once, and Creator is $19 a month for 195 credits.
